When faced with difficult dilemmas (fight for your God or for your country?), he turns to people he respects and trusts for answers. That's when the game lets YOU choose your answer to the main question.Įder feels lost when he can be assured of nothing. This means that the Gods are not his creator, and therefore no ultimate answers can be provided by them. In ActIII, he is informed that the Gods are manmade (if we are to believe Iovara). So his initial answer to the main question is "I am going to look for answers till I find them". The main character is trying to understand what happened to him (being a watcher and all). But if you have been paying attention, this very topic is studied from different angles throughout the game. This is explicitly uttered by Iovara in your last conversation with her in Act III, where the game lets you choose your answer. The main theme is: What if we can be assured of nothing? I will be updating this post as more information becomes available. I am still discovering its details (there is so much of it!) and having a-ha! moments, so I am opening this topic to discuss what I have found and hopefully others will do the same. It is not spoon-fed to you and I find the whole approach to be very sophisticated. It is a story for intelligent people, which is kind of rare in videogames. Though these skyscrapers were commercial successes, criticism mounted as they broke up the ordered city skyline and plunged neighboring streets and buildings into perpetual shadow. Iconic buildings such as the Flatiron were followed by the 612-foot (187 m) tall Singer Tower, the 700-foot (210 m) Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, and the 792-foot (241 m) Woolworth Building. Chicago built new skyscrapers in its existing style, while New York experimented further with tower design. Engineering developments made it easier to build and live in yet taller buildings. The demand for new office space to hold the expanding workforce of white-collar staff in the U.S. In 1892, Chicago banned the construction of new skyscrapers taller than 150 feet (46 m), leaving the development of taller buildings to New York.Ī new wave of skyscraper construction emerged in the first decade of the 20th century. In contrast, New York's skyscrapers were frequently narrower towers which, more eclectic in style, were often criticized for their lack of elegance. Sometimes termed the products of the Chicago school of architecture, these skyscrapers attempted to balance aesthetic concerns with practical commercial design, producing large, square palazzo-styled buildings hosting shops and restaurants on the ground level and containing rentable offices on the upper floors. Their numbers grew rapidly, and by 1888 they were being labelled "skyscrapers".Ĭhicago initially led the way in skyscraper design, with many constructed in the center of its financial district during the late 1880s and early 1890s. These made it both technically and commercially viable to build a new class of taller buildings, the first of which, Chicago's 138-foot (42 m) tall Home Insurance Building, opened in 1885. Technological improvements enabled the construction of fireproofed iron-framed structures with deep foundations, equipped with new inventions such as the elevator and electric lighting. Cities in the United States were traditionally made up of low-rise buildings, but significant economic growth after the American Civil War and increasingly intensive use of urban land encouraged the development of taller buildings beginning in the 1870s. The earliest stage of skyscraper design encompasses buildings built between 18, predominantly in the American cities of New York and Chicago. Meanwhile, millennials, who now make up nearly 40% of the U.S. One attrition driver is demographics: Retirements of baby boomers hit a record 28.6 million in the third quarter of 2020, with Pew Research showing 3.2 million more boomers retired compared with Q3 2019. The reasons people leave vary, and companies can’t always stem the tide. Turnover, especially the voluntary variety, impacts a company’s ability to achieve business objectives and is a key concern for executives. Turnover is expensive: Gallup pegs the cost at between one-half to two times the salary of the employee being replaced.Employees who voluntarily leave their jobs are often seeking more money and better benefits, career progress, a more optimal work/life balance, or to escape an ineffective or toxic manager.Turnover is broken down into two types: voluntary, where people leave of their own volition, and involuntary, where people have been terminated or were part of a seasonal layoff or reduction in force.Separations include everyone who is no longer with the company, regardless of the reason. Turnover measures separations-employees who leave a company-within a certain time period. When calculating attrition, force reductions and terminations are not counted. It includes those who exit voluntarily as well as employees who are fired or laid off-that is, involuntary turnover. What Is Employee Turnover?Įmployee turnover refers to the total number of workers who leave a company over a certain time period. They actively manage their career development programs and look at total compensation metrics in context of the cost of replacing top performers. They hold managers responsible for keeping the lines of communication open with their reports. These factors are too important to leave to chance, so the most successful firms use data to ensure excellence: They compare their attrition rates with national and industry-specific benchmarks. How successfully a company hires, onboards, manages and rewards its people is fundamental to success. East, Nordics and Other Regions (opens in new tab) If the thermostat is held in place by a mounting clip, remove it and lift out the component. At the same time, twist that side upward so the bracket won’t lock again while twisting the bracket on the other side. Locate the bracket that holds the thermostat in place against the tank and pry out one side of this bracket. Now you can disconnect each wire from the old unit. Label all the wires connected to the thermostat before you remove them (and create a diagram just to be safe). Using a voltage tester, determine whether electricity is still flowing to the unit. Take out the plastic safety panel as well. Then remove the screws for the access panel on the water heater and remove the panel. The unit should be connected to a 30-amp breaker. Switch the water heater off and disconnect the power by shutting off the circuit breaker. When the water starts hot and then gets cold, you’ll need a new lower thermostat and element. If the water is warming up but is not hot enough, the upper thermostat and heating element will need to be replaced. This can be quite tricky and rather dangerous so you may want to hire a professional.Įlectric water heaters have two thermostats-one for each heating element. If you have a gas water heater, the entire gas valve assembly (which includes the thermostat and heat limiting device) will need to be replaced. Installing a new thermostat requires some wiring work, so it’s important to be prepared. Here’s a look at how to replace the water heater thermostat to get it working again. Or, your water heater may not work at all. A faulty thermostat can cause your system to run inefficiently. When you call The Plumbing Source, you’ve made the right call! Call us at 87.If you’ve flushed the water heater tank, determined the unit is receiving power, and followed other troubleshooting steps and its troubles aren’t resolved, it may need a new thermostat. What’s more, we have more than 20 highly trained technicians servicing all of Northeast Ohio in trucks equipped with GPS systems – we could literally be right around the corner! We carry a full line of conventional hot water tanks as well as the newer tankless hot water heaters. We are experts when it comes to hot water heaters. In either case, the sediment and deteriorating element mean replacement is imminent. Sometimes this is just sediment burning off the heating element, but sometimes this is caused when the heating element is burning itself up. Sometimes you will hear a gurgle, but these sounds spell trouble: If you see a leak, turn off electricity to the heater and, if gas-fired, turn off the gas.Ī properly functioning water heater is nearly silent. If the hot water tastes metallic, the lining of your hot water heater is sloughing (breaking down) and is likely to leak soon.Īs your heater gets to be a teenager, check the room in which it sits and look for leaks along the side of the heater, at the circular base, and on the floor. If the water has an odor, looks muddy, or has a lot of sediment in it, your tank is likely to fail soon.Īnother test, and a little less pleasant, is to taste the water. Rust-colored water means rust in the tank, and a need for replacement. Run the hot water in your tub and check its color. Modern heaters, especially Energy Star-certified models, use 14 to 55 percent less electricity than older models, can produce hot water some 20 percent more efficiently, and can save thousands in gas or electricity costs over their lifetime. These reduce your heater’s ability to efficiently convert electricity or gas into heat, and cost you money. Heaters build up scale, or mineral deposits, over time. You may be fortunate to eek out 17 years of service, but you are wasting energy and money on an inefficient heater. Failure may be in as little as eight years when water conditions are harsh or the water heater is in a corrosive environment. Without regard to brand or manufacturers’ claims, water heaters do not last far beyond that range. Water heaters last between ten and 15 years. Recognize the four signs of the need for a new water heater and your careful planning will bring you an energy-efficient, reasonably priced water heater that provides years of trouble-free service. You need time to choose wisely, so waiting until catastrophic failure, such as a flood from a ruptured tank, is not wise. The decision to replace your home’s hot water heater may be made for you, when the unit fails. Staff was great and very friendly - Tasha, Nate, Bryan & Jonah all really made our stay perfect!. The historic charm combined with modern upgrades and decoration make the whole place inviting. A little hard to figure out on a first visit. If there was a negative, it was that the main entrance with the valet parking was on a side street around the corner from the official address. Alex (?) parked our car, brought up our bags, brought us extra chairs for our room, and delivered our missing water glasses with smiles! The young lady at the front desk on Tuesday and Wednesday was a delight and cheerfully helped us with some problems like our lost valet parking ticket! Our waitress for our breakfasts (if you reserve, add the breakfast option…you won’t be sorry) was amazing! The hotel itself is beautiful, and yes, a little quirky. Everyone was helpful, friendly, and efficient. Best part of our stay was the exceptional service. We selected the Hotel Indigo because of its proximity to an exhibit we were visiting, but also because it seemed a little quirky and out of the ordinary. "The consequences are that they would merge and/or be ejected in a game of interstellar pinball," the researchers wrote in the statement. The region the researchers found was more compact than they would expect if its intense gravity had been produced by other dense star corpses, like neutron stars and white dwarfs, and it would take 40 stellar-mass black holes packed into a space one-tenth of a light-year across to make the stars orbit them so intensely. What's the biggest black hole in the universe? Black holes may be swallowing invisible matter that slows the movement of stars 'Green Monster' supernova is the youngest in the Milky Way, James Webb telescope reveals "It's about three times smaller than the densest dark mass that we had found before in other globular clusters." "We have good confidence that we have a very tiny region with a lot of concentrated mass," Vitral said. By applying physical models to how these stars moved, the researchers discovered that the stars were moving around something massive and were not directly detectable in the cluster's center. By using the Hubble and Gaia space telescopes, the researchers used 12 years of data to pinpoint the stars in the cluster and study their movements around its center. Messier 4 is the closest globular star cluster to Earth. Roughly 180 globular clusters dot our Milky Way galaxy and, because they have a high concentration of mass in their centers, are ideal stomping grounds for adolescent black holes. Globular clusters are clumps of tens of thousands to millions of tightly packed stars, many of which are among the most ancient to have ever formed in our universe. To look for signs of a lurking intermediate-mass black hole, the authors of the new study pointed the Hubble Space Telescope toward the globular star cluster Messier 4. If black holes grow from stellar to supermassive size by gorging themselves in an endless feeding frenzy, the lack of confirmed sightings of black holes in their awkward teenage phases points to an even bigger hole in our understanding of the cosmic monsters. While there have been several promising candidates, no intermediate-mass black holes have been definitively confirmed to exist. Intermediate-mass black holes - which, theoretically, range from 100 to 100,000 times the sun's mass - are the most elusive black holes in the universe. The baking time is similar, but begin to check the strata after 45 minutes or so in the oven. If you are planning a smaller celebration - which is not uncommon these days - you can easily halve this recipe and bake the strata in a smaller dish. This recipe makes a strata big enough to feed a whole houseful of guests. So many of us are trying to eat a more plant-based diet these days, and with all the gorgeous fall flavors in this strata, no one will miss the meat. I have kept this particular strata recipe vegetarian to make it as versatile as possible. Squash pairs beautifully with both gruyère and Parmesan, so I use a mix of the two cheese. I often like to combine a good melting cheese, like Swiss, cheddar, mozzarella, or gruyère, with a drier cheese, like Parmesan, or a crumbly cheese, like goat cheese, for the best flavor.įor fall and winter holidays, I often serve a breakfast strata studded with cubes of roasted butternut squash, which has an earthy sweetness, and some fresh herbs like sage and thyme. The gooey, melted cheese combined with the spongy bread cubes is what makes a strata so very irresistible. Naturally, cheese is an important part of any strata. Whatever you choose to include, the ingredients should be fully cooked and cooled before adding them to the strata - unless they are something you might normally eat raw, like scallions. A spring strata for Easter or Mother’s Day could feature asparagus and ham, while a late fall or winter strata would be perfect with kale, sausage or winter squash. I like to change what I add to my strata based on the seasons. Some of my favorite additions include sautéed spinach (or other dark, leafy greens), onion or leeks, mushrooms, strips of bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, cubes of ham or sausage, chopped bacon, or even smoked salmon. But notice that all the hard work happens the night before your party - making a strata the perfect no-stress centerpiece for any special breakfast or brunch.Īnother benefit of a strata is that you can add lots of different ingredients - from vegetables to meat to fresh herbs - to turn this breakfast casserole into a crowd-pleasing, one-dish meal. The bread cubes sit in the custard overnight, absorbing the liquid, and the following morning, you bake the casserole until golden and bubbling. To make a strata, you combine cubes of bread - stale or day-old works best - with a custard-like mixture of milk, eggs and cheese. When I was growing up, my mother made a strata for just about every occasion that required entertaining in the morning - including the morning after my senior prom. I am talking, of course, about a strata - a type of savory bread pudding. And the solution is a one-dish meal that you prepare the night before and bake off in the morning so it is fresh and hot when your guests arrive. Forget about spending time with your friends and family! Isn’t there a way to have everyone over for a special holiday breakfast or brunch without all the stress? And for some of those holidays, you might be out of the house for part of the morning - making preparing a meal that much more difficult.Īnother problem with feeding a crowd at breakfast is that so many of our favorite breakfast foods - think omelets and pancakes - require long periods of standing over a hot stove. The last thing anyone wants to do on a holiday morning is wake up at the crack of dawn and start cooking. Despite how often we are called upon to feed a crowd first thing in the morning, it remains a challenge. Entertaining at breakfast or brunch is a regular part of many holidays - from New Year’s Day to Easter to Mother’s Day and right back through Christmas. |
